Tantalus ‘Voile Reserve’ Waiheke Island Syrah 2014
Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland

18.5/20
Very dark, deep, black-red colour, near impenetrable, and a
little lighter on the rim. The nose is
fine in concentration with tightly bound, harmoniously interwoven aromas of
ripe blackberry and black plum fruit, along with notes of liquorice, tar, black
pepper and spices, unfolding black and violet florals with time in the
glass. Medium-bodied, the palate is
elegant in presentation with rich and sweetly concentrated flavours of
blackberries, plums, liquorice and spices, and violet florals, all harmoniously
melded together. The wine is
smooth-flowing with fine grained tannin extraction and structure, and
integrated acidity, and the flavours carry to a lingering and sustained finish
with spice nuances. This is an elegantly
concentrated, rich and harmonious Syrah with blackberry and plum fruit with
spice and violet elements, and a smooth, fine-textured palate. Serve with Middle Eastern cuisine and game
meat dishes over the next 6+ years. Hand-picked
fruit, fully destemmed and fermented partially with indigenous yeasts to 14.0%
alc., the wine aged 11 months in 40% new French oak. 18.5/20
