SOHO ‘Valentina’ Waiheke Island Syrah 2015
Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 07-Jul-2016

18+/20
Very full, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with light
purple hues on the rim, youthful in appearance.
The nose is elegantly concentrated, tightly bound and refined in
presentation with aromas of ripe blackberry fruit with layers of black pepper,
iron-earth and dark herbs. Medium-full
bodied, vibrant and youthfully bright, firmly held flavours of blackberry fruit
are entwined with black pepper, liquorice, iron-earth, black ink and a dark
herbal array. The palate is
well-concentrated, and guided by a fine line of flowery tannins, energised by
integrated underlying acidity. The wine
has linearity and leads to a lingering black-fruited finish with plum,
liquorice and earthy elements. This is
an elegant, tightly bound, black-fruited Syrah with earth, herbs ink and
liquorice notes on a fine structured palate.
Match with game meat over the next 4-5+ years. Three clones of Syrah, hand-picked fruit from
SOHO’s ‘Jomara’ vineyard, blended with a touch of Petit Verdot, fermented to
14.0% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 14% new and 1 y.o. French and American
oak barriques, the latter approx.5%.. 18.0+/20 Jul 2016
