Mudbrick ‘Velvet’ Waiheke Island 2015
Blended Red from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 03-Jul-2016

19+/20
Full, dark, deep, near impenetrable black-hued ruby-red
colour with youthful purple hues. The
nose is full and voluminous with gentle layers of aromatics revealing ripe
blackberries and blackcurrants with spices, dark herbs, earth and mineral
complexities. This grows in opulence
showing cassis liqueur, cedar and pencilly oak.
Medium-full bodied, the palate is full, bold and opulent with sweetly
ripe fruit flavours of dark red and blackberry fruit, along with plums and
liquorice. Waves of cedar are melded
with vanilla and pencil-shavings oak.
The mouthfeel is decadent, but balanced by finely-textured, substantial
tannin extraction, and the palate is harmonious in presentation, and flows
smoothly to a long finish of sweet plums and dark chocolate. This is a rich, lusciously opulent
Cabernet/Merlot blend with black fruit and exotic oaking, with substantial
extract and structure, presented with great harmony. Match with lamb dishes over the next 10-12
years. A blend of 65% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Malbec from the ‘Mudbrick’ and ‘Shepherds Point’
vineyards, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in
45% new French oak barriques. 150 cases
made. 19.0+/20 Jul 2016
