Mudbrick ‘Reserve’ Waiheke Island Tempranillo 2015
Tempranillo from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland

18.5/20
Full, dark, deep, black-hued purple-red, a little lighter on
the rim. This has a tightly held nose
with aromas of black and redcurrants, blackberry fruit with subtle dark herb
and lifted floral notes. The aromatics
possess elegance and finesse, revealing a core of black minerals. Medium-fill bodied, the palate is tightly
concentrated and intensely packed with black berried fruits entwined with
currants and herbs, unfolding sweet raspberry elements. This has real depth, concentration and
intensity, with fine-grained extraction and underlying power. The wine carries to a long, lingering juicy
finish with cassis liqueur nuances. This
is a tightly concentrated and intense Tempranillo with blackberry fruit, cassis
and plenty of tannin structure, drive and power. Match with barbecued and grilled, herb-marinated
lamb and beef dishes over the next 8-10 years.
100% Tempranillo from the ‘Hawkes Crest’ vineyard, indigenous yeast
fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in 15% new French oak
barrels. 125 cases made. 18.5/20
