Thomas Waiheke Island Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2013
Blended Red from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 22-Feb-2016

18.5/20
Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with black hues and light purple
on the edge. This has a firmy
concentrated and well-proportioned nose of ripe redcurrant fruit lifted by fragrant
red floral elements and entwined with blackcurrant and cassis notes. Subtle herbal nuances add detail and the
integrated oak contributes to the vibrancy.
Medium-full bodied, bright, fresh and vibrantly juicy flavours of ripe
redcurrants, herbs and cassis show with sweetness and lusciousness. The fruit is complexed by subtle oak toast,
and balanced by fine-gained tannin extraction.
Bright acidity enhances the vitality and the wine carries with good
energy and linearity, carrying to a sustained, sweet fruited finish. This is a beautifully elegant, sweet
redcurrant fruited Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend with fine tannin structure
and a fresh, vibrant mouthfeel. Match
with roasted lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8+ years. A blend of 52% Cabernet Franc, 34% Merlot and
14% Cabernet Sauvignon from Onetangi Valley, hand-picked and indigenous yeast
fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 17% new French oak
barriques. 558 bottles made. 18.5/20
