Thomas Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2014
Chardonnay from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 22-Feb-2016

18+/20
Bright pale straw-yellow colour, lighter on the rim. The nose is very refined and elegant in presentation
with tightly bound, fresh aromas of white and yellow stonefruits entwined with
subtle struck-match, flinty, reductive elements, unfolding aromatic, nutty oak,
nuances of toast and rich, creamy barrel-ferment notes. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in
proportion with tightly bound flavours of white stonefruits, citrus fruit and
gunflint complexities. The mouthfeel is
youthfully firm and taut, nearly austere, with smooth, refined textures and
soft, lacy acidity. The fruit reveals
sweetness as it leads to a long, lingering tight finish. This is a refined, tight and taut Chardonnay
with stonefruit flavours and flinty complexities. Match with seafood and poultry over the next
4-5+ years. Hand-picked fruit from
Onetangi Valley, foot-stomped and barrel-fermented with indigenous yeast to
13.9% alc., the wine aged 11 months in seasoned French oak barriques with
batonnage and partial MLF. 637 bottles
made. 18.0+/20 Feb 2016
