Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland

19/20
Very
full, near saturated black-red colour with purple hues on the rim. This has a very full and voluminous nose
packed with ripe, aromatic blackberry fruit lifted by exotic violet and black
floral perfumes. Layers of black pepper,
Asian spices unfold revealing complex savoury black herb, oak and balsamic
elements. Medium-full bodied, the fruit
flavours of ripe blackberries are sweet and succulently vibrant and melded with
layers of black pepper, fragrant Asian spices, plums and liquorice, unveiling
violet and black floral elements. Oak
and whole bunch elements are integral.
The fruit is supported by very fine-grained supple tannin extraction and
integrated lacy acidity lending tension, drive and vitality. As the wine flows,
complexing soy sauce and balsamic nuances unfold and carry to a soft, long,
concentrated finish. This is a rich,
vibrant, sweet and luscious Syrah with ripe black fruits and complexing
liquorice, spice and balsamic detail, and a fine, supple structure. Serve with Middle Eastern lamb dishes over
the next 7-10 years. MS clone fruit from
the ‘Obsidian’ ‘Block 2’, fermented with approx. 15% whole clusters to 14.0%
alc., the wine spending 3 weeks on skins and aged 12 months in 40% new French
oak. 125 dozen made. 19.0/20
