Goldie Waiheke Island Cabernet/Merlot/Franc 2012
Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 21-Aug-2015

18+/20
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5%
Cabernet Franc, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 10
months in 30% new French oak. Dark, deep
ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the edge with some brick hues. The nose is elegantly proportioned with
firmly concentrated primary aromas of vibrantly fresh, ripe blackberries and
blackcurrants intermixed with fresh herbs, spices, minerals and balanced
oak. Medium-full bodied, this has a
tightly concentrated core of sweetly ripe blackberry, plum and blackcurranty
fruit flavours, complexed by earthy elements, supported by fine-grained tannin
extraction and structure. Fresh, lacy
acidity enlivens the mouthfeel, lifting the aromatic, primary fruit flavours to
show some cassis and pepper. The wine
flows with vitality and tension, leading to a long, lingering, fine-textured
finish. This is a fresh, vibrant
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend with flavours of blackcurrants, plums and
earth, supported by fine, grainy tannins.
Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 7-9 years. 18.0+/20
