Goldie ‘Reserve’ Waiheke Island Syrah 2013
Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 21-Aug-2015

19-/20
The first release of a ‘Reserve’ Syrah. Hand-picked fruit fermented to 14.8% alc.,
the wine aged 13 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour
with a slightly lighter edge. The nose
is full and densely concentrated with aromas of very ripe black berry and plum
fruits, black pepper, iron and earth elements and some charry, toasty oak. Complexing nuances of tar, minerals, Asian
spices, black and violet florals and a balsamic suggestion emerge to provide complexing
detail and layers. Full-bodied and
solidly concentrated on the palate, this has fulsome, sweetly ripe flavours of
black berry and plum fruit flavours melded with black pepper, earth and toasty
oak. The flavours are lush and
well-integrated, revealing harmoniously entwined notes of liquorice, minerals,
and black and violet florals. The fruit
is supported by considerable extract, the tannins very fine-grained, lending
textural finesse. Soft acidity enhances
the roundness and density, and the wine flows smoothly to a sustained finish of
liquorice, tar and minerals and violet notes.
This is a full and solidly packed, complex flavoured Syrah with real
weight and presence, and harmoniously integrated, fine-grained tannin structure. Match with slow-cooked game meat over the
next 8-10 years. 150 cases made. 19.0-/20
