Goldie Waiheke Island Syrah 2014
Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 21-Aug-2015

18+/20
Very dark, black-hued purple-red colour, very youthful in
appearance. This has a very fresh,
bright, fragrant nose with aromatic black berried fruit with a fine thread of
white and black pepper and violet florals, showing with very good
intensity. Subtle nuances of Asian
spices and meat unfold, adding detail and interest. Medium-full to full bodied, fresh, bright and
lively fruit flavours of blackberries, and white and black pepper firm an
elegantly concentrated core. Very
fine-grained, powdery tannin extraction supports the fruit, providing a
supple-textured, accessible palate. Lacy
acidity lends energy and good palate tension.
Nuances of spice, florals and a suggestion of mineral reduction emerge,
adding to the detail. The palate carries
the flavours to a long, aromatic finish.
This is an elegant, aromatic, lively Syrah with black fruits and peppery
notes, and a fine-textured mouthfeel. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine
over the next 5-6+ years. Hand-picked
fruit fermented to 14.3% alc., the wine aged 9 months in new and seasoned
French oak barriques. 350 cases
made. 18.0+/20 Aug 2015
