Urbn Vino Dunedin ‘Reserve’ 2016 Pinot Noir

12 January,2018

Brendan Seal makes small lots of one-off Central Otago wine, predominantly working with Pinot Noir. His modus operandi is to source small parcels of fruit from different sub-regions and make wine that expresses the site as well as variety. He tries different vinification techniques with each wine, so his bottlings are truly unique. Having operated out of the Packspur winery in Lowburn for a number of years, he will be shifting his base to Dunedin, where he will be running his new URBN VINO urban winery. This is a project that began in 2016, where he transported Central Otago Pinot Noir fruit to Dunedin to be vinified in a heritage building site, then pressed to barrel, which is taken back to Central Otago for maturation and bottling. Recently he released the Urban Vino Dunedin Pinot Noir 2016 made by this process, to help raise funds for continuing the development (click here to see my review). A ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noir 2016 has now come available. I review that wine here. www.urbnvino.nz

Urbn Vino Dunedin 'Reserve' Central Otago Pinot Noir 2016

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

18/20

Light ruby-red colour, paler on the edge, with slight purple hues. The nose is elegantly concentrated with aromas of ripe dark-red berry fruit with notes of black fruits. The fruit is expressed with purity and finesse, unfolding a gentle array of red florals entwined with subtle dark herb notes and spicy, nutty oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate has good depth and presence, with flavours of ripe dark-red cherry and berry fruit with black fruit elements, harmoniously interwoven dark-red florals, dark herbs, and spicy, nutty oak. The flavours form a deep hearted core, providing fruit weight and presence. The wine has good drive and flows along a fine-grained, supple-textured line, leading to a long, sustained finish. This is a dark-red and black-fruited Pinot Noir with dark herbs and spicy, nutty oak on a palate with good presence and supple structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 5+ years. Hand-picked fruit, clone 114 from a single site in Bendigo, fully destemmed and vinified in the URBN VINO urban winery in Dunedin, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in seasoned oak, 45% 1 y.o. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. 55 cases made. Available from the URBN VINO urban winery. 18.0/20 Dec 2017 RRP $50.00
