Sherwood Estate ‘Sherwood’ Waipara Pinot Noir 2017

31 May,2018

With over 30 years of winegrowing, Dayne and Jill Sherwood of Sherwood Estate are amongst this country’s most experienced wine producers. Still independent and family owned, the Sherwoods' business encompasses 50 ha of vineyards in North Canterbury. They make a broad range of wines over different tiers that well-represent their provenance. Over half of the production is exported to over 25 countries. The highly respected and very experienced Petter Evans oversees the winemaking. Here, I review the new release 2017 Sherwood Estate ‘Sherwood’ Pinot Noir. www.sherwoodestate.co.nz

Sherwood Estate ‘Sherwood’ Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2017

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

17.5-/20

Moderately dark ruby-red colour with some depth, lighter on the rim with youthful purple hues. The nose is elegant in presentation with fresh aromas of dark-red cherry and raspberry fruit entwined with a layering of fresh and dark herbs. The aromas form a tight core unfolding hints of minerals with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate is fresh and bright with lively fruit flavours of cherries and raspberries, along with some subtle herbal notes. The flavours form a positive core showing concentration, and the fruit is underlined by youthfully grainy tannins. The mouthfeel is enlivened by fresh, crisp acidity and the wine carries with good linearity to a lingering finish of raspberries. This is a fresh and lively, vibrantly fruited Pinot Noir with cherry and raspberry fruit along with some herbal notes on a grainy-textured, crisp palate. Match with tuna, salmon, duck and pork dishes over the next 3-4 years. Fruit from the ‘Pilgrim’. ‘Glasnevin’, ‘Georges Road’, ‘Stirling’, ‘Terraces’ and ‘Church Road’ vineyards, indigenous yeast fermented to 11.5% alc., the wine on skins for 21 days and aged 9 months in barrel. 17.5-/20 May 2018 RRP $21.99
