Salomon & Andrew Central Otago Pinot Noir 2013 – 2015

03 April,2017
Chris Andrew, a very experienced Marlborough winemaker built up a strong relationship with Bertold Salomon of the Salomon winery in Krems, Austria over several stages working vintage, leading to the Saloon & Andrew label which has Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Central Otago Pinot Noir. This joins the Salomon family’s joint venture in a vineyard in Finniss River in South Australia. The Salomon & Andrew wines are marketed by Salomon Wines and sold in Europe and Asia. Here, I review the Salomon & Andrew Pinot Noirs from 2015 to 2013. www.salomonwines.com

Salomon & Andrew Central Otago Pinot Noir 2015

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

17+/20
Light ruby-red colour with some youthful purple hues, pale on the rim. This has a softly full nose with good vinous presence, but is initially restrained and shy in expression, showing dark cherry and red berry fruit aromas entwined with subtle nuances of fresh herbs and floral perfumes. This has a soft core that is yet to unfold. Medium-bodied, the palate has elegantly concentrated, bright flavours of red cherries and berry fruit entwined with herb and floral notes. The palate is refreshing with lacy acidity enlivening the fruit aromatics and mouthfeel, and the wine has light, supple tannin structure that allows the fruit to feature. The wine carries to a lively, juicy finish of red cherry fruit. This is a medium-bodied Pinot Noir with flavours of red cherries and florals on a lively, supple and accessible palate. Serve with antipasto, firm-fleshed seafood and poultry over the next 3-4 years. Hand-picked fruit from Bannockburn, fully destemmed and given a cold soak, and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months in approx. 25% new French oak. 17.0+/20 Apr 2017 RRP €25.00

Salomon & Andrew Central Otago Pinot Noir 2014

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

17.5+/20
Even ruby-red colour, paler on the edge with slight purple tints. The nose is softly full and voluminous with ethereal aromas of red cherry fruit with subtle nuances of thyme herbs, unfolding red floral elements, with suggestions of raspberries and liquorice. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a well-concentrated heart of dark-red cherry and raspberry fruit layered with red florals and dark herbs. The mouthfeel is fine-featured with flowery tannin extraction and balanced by fresh acidity. The palate has good linearity, carrying to a light, lingering finish of cherries and raspberries. This is an elegantly concentrated and fine featured Pinot Noir with cherry and raspberry flavours on a refined-textured, fresh palate. Match with poultry and pork over the next 4+ years. Hand-picked fruit from Bannockburn, fully destemmed and given a cold soak, and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months in approx. 25% new French oak. 17.5+/20 Apr 2017 RRP €25.00

Salomon & Andrew Central Otago Pinot Noir 2013

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

17.5+/20
Dark, deep ruby-red with black hues, a little lighter on the rim. The bouquet is full and solidly packed with dense aromas of ripe dark-red berry fruits along with dark raspberries, herbs and savoury, nutty oak elements. The nose unfolds savoury, secondary dried herb and undergrowth complexities with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and deeply packed flavours of savoury dark-red berry fruits interwoven with savoury secondary complexities showing dark and dried herbs and undergrowth. The palate is well-structured with plenty of tannin extraction, and the acidity is balanced, providing good energy and drive. The wine carries to a lively finish of savoury red fruits and dried herbs. This is a well-structured Pinot Noir with complex savoury red fruit, dried herb and undergrowth flavours. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked game meat over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked fruit from Bannockburn, fully destemmed and given a cold soak, and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months in approx. 25% new French oak. 17.5+/20 Apr 2017 RRP €25.00
