Redmetal 2017 Albarino and Syrah, and 2016 Merlot Franc and Basket Press Merlot Franc

Following his departure from the chief winemaker role at Villa Maria, Grant Edmonds and his wife Sue established Redmetal Vineyards with vines on Marekakaho Road in the Bridge Pa Triangle district producing their first wines with the 1996 vintage. The vineyard devoted to Merlot with Cabernet Franc in support gained critical acclaim. I am pleased to say that during my time in retail at Regional Wines, we had a great relationship and sales soared. However Grant got the call up to assist the Avery family to set up and run Sileni Estates next door. The exponential growth of Sileni Estates meant that the Redmetal Vineyards brand was put on the backburner.

However over the years, the value of the Redmetal Vineyards brand has been recognised again, with the wines coming under the Sileni Estates distribution arm. Grant and Sue have reinvested back into the vineyard and winemaking, with some assistance from Bron Davies for a while, and now, Grant has devoted the time to be hands-on in the making of the wines. The Edmonds have kept abreast of the developments in the New Zealand wine scene, and the 7 ha vineyard planted predominantly to Merlot with Cabernet Franc, has 1.4 ha of Syrah, yielding fruit in 2009, but as a commercial proposition with the 2012 vintage. There is also 0.6 ha of Albarino, which gave a first crop in 2015. The Edmonds are very pleased with these changes. Bright, light golden colour with pale lemon-green hues, with some depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantlt proportioned with fresh, deep aromas of tropical fruits and exotic yellow florals, along with subtle notes of citrus fruits, unfolding nuances of fresh herbs. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has an elegant core with well-packed flavours of yellow stonefruits and tropical fruit, along with notes of citrus fruits and yellow florals, unveiling hints of herbs. The flavours are up-front and enlivened by a line of fresh, lacy acidity. The palate has a soft richness which is underlined by a little phenolic texture that carries to a dry, taut finish. This is an elegant but well-concentrated dry Albarino with flavours of tropical and citrus fruit along with exotic florals. The palate is rounded with fine acidity and emerging phenolics that lead to a taut finish. Serve with seafood, and Asian fare over the next 2-3 years. 100% Albarino, hand-picked and WBP, and cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.0% alc. and 3.5 g/L RS, TA 5.55 g/L and pH 3.46, the wine aged 5 months on lees. 18.0-/20 Jun 2018 RRP $28.00

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Moderately dark, deep, ruby-red colour, lighter on the rim with purple hues. The nose is finely presented, a little slender, with soft aromas of raspberry fruit entwined with white pepper, unfolding some black pepper and blackberry notes, dark-red florals and hints of herbs. The aromatics grow in depth to form an elegantly concentrated core. Medium-bodied, the palate has an up-front, juicy palate with flavours of dark raspberries and white pepper with notes of dark herbs, unveiling red florals and hints of spice. The fruit is open and accessible, and forms a softly concentrated heart with light tannin extraction that firms up on the back palate. The acidity is integrated and the wine carries to a light finish. This is an up-front, elegant and accessible, juicy Syrah with raspberry and white pepper flavours, along with spices. Match with antipasto and Mediterranean fare over the next 3 years. A blend of 88% Syrah and 12% Merlot, fully destemmed and fermented to 12.0% alc., the wine given oak contact. 17.0/20 Jun 2018 RRP $24.00

Dark, black-hued ruby-red colour with a deep heart, a little lighter on the rim with slight purple hues. This has a deeply concentrated and well-packed nose with a core of ripe blackberry and black plum fruit along with fragrant red berry fruits and dark-red florals, unfolding suggestions of dark herbs and earth. This has good depth and intensity. Medium-full bodied, the palate is fine in proportion with a sweetly ripe, juicy heart of ripe black plum and black berried fruits harmoniously entwined with floral and herbal detail. The fruitiness is enhanced by fresh, lacy, balancing acidity and supported by light tannin extraction. This has good linearity and carries to an elegant, lingering, sweet-fruited finish. This is an elegant, juicy and sweet-fruited Merlot-based wine with dark-red and black plum and berried fruits, with hints of herbs and florals and a little earthiness on a smooth, supple palate. Match with barbecued and grilled red meats over the next 3-4 years. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, fermented to 13.5% alc., a portion of the wine aged in oak barrels. 17.5+/20 Jun 2018 RRP $22.00

Full, even, black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is full and voluminous with aromas of ripe dark-red and black plums along with blackberries entwined with sweet and spicy oak vanillins, unfolding a fine layer of dark herbs and earthy complexities. The aromatics grow in density with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate has richly packed and sweetly concentrated flavours of ripe black plums along with blackberried fruits, revealing notes of dark herbs, earth, sweet and spicy oak vanillins. The fruit flavours are mouthfilling and possesses good presence, and are supported by fine-grained tannin structure with integrated, balanced acidity. The flavours show some robustness and flow with good energy to a smooth-textured finish. This is a richly packed and softly concentrated Merlot with ripe black plum and berry fruit along with spices and oak, and herbs and earth on a fine-textured palate. Match with roasted and grilled lamb, beef and venison over the next 6 years. A blend of 99.5% Merlot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 20% new oak. 18.0+/20 Jun 2018 RRP $38.00
