Pierre Peters Champagne Blanc de Blancs ‘L’Esprit de 2013’

29 November,2018

The grower Champagnes of Pierre Peters have a strong following due to their quality and distinctive style. The Peters family have a history back to 1840, and has been under the direction of Rodolphe Peters since 2008. The estate is based on 18 ha of vines, on average 30 y.o.. in the grand cru villages of Le Mesnil sur Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant, of which around two-thirds is in Le Mesnil. The estate produces a range of wines that respects place and the Chardonnay grape, though high quality Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier is sourced to make rosé. The estate employs a unique solera system for the reserve wines which bestows a degree of house character, but also consistency. The Peters Champagnes have QR codes on the back label which provide detailed information on the wines. The ‘L’Esprit de 2013’ is one of Pierre Peters more accessible wines designed to showcase both the Chardonnay grape and the beauty of the 2013 vintage. I review the wine here. Pierre Peters Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut ‘L’Esprit de 2013’

Sparkling Wine from France – Champagne

18.5/20

Bright straw-yellow colour with pale golden hues, lighter on the edge, the bubbles fine and persistent. The bouquet is softly full and voluminous with aromas of white stonefruits and white florals harmoniously layered with good depth and intensity of detailed bready-yeasty autolysis. The aromatics are pure with an up-front accessibility. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has elegant flavours of white stonefruits, white florals and a hint of citrus fruit with delicate nutty elements, melded with soft but positive bread and yeast autolysis. The fruit sweetness and richness feature and this is balanced by gentle lacy acidity, with soft effervescence. The wine flows along a a soft, very fine line leading to a floral and bready finish. This is a softly clean and pure, accessible Blanc de Blancs Champagne with rich white stonefruit flavours and harmonious autolysis on a very fine-textured palate. Serve as an aperitif over the next 3+ years. 100% grand cru Chardonnay, from Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant and Oger, fermented to 12.0% alc. and a dosage of 4.2 g/L, disgorged April 2018. Lot L580889. 18.5/20 Nov 2018 RRP $125.00
