Newton’s Law Gimblett Gravels 2015

Newton’s Law is a secondary brand of the joint-venture of Bob Newton and Dr John Forest who operate the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels. The vineyard has a strong reputation for producing outstanding Bordeaux varietal and Syrah fruit, and this is partly accredited to the extremely ‘bony’ nature of the site. I’ve reviewed the 2013 and 2014 releases of Newton’s Law, and they have impressed with their quality to value ratio. Here, I review the new 2015 vintage. www.forrest.co.nz

Newton’s Law Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay 2015

Blended Red from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly concentrated with firm and deep aromas of blackberry fruit with some blackcurrant, cassis and black plum notes, along with iron-earth minerals. Nuances of nutty oak add detail. Suggestions of blackcurrant leaf emerge with aeration Medium-full bodied, the palate has a concentrated and firm core of blackberry fruit with notes of blackcurrants, plums, ink and iron-earth mineral elements. Notes of fresh herbs and a hint of leaf unfold. The fruit is underlined by fine-grained tannin structure and grip, with fresh, lacy acidity. The wine flows with good linearity and drive, carrying through to a finely proportioned, sustained finish. This is a firm and concentrated Bordeaux variety-based blend with black fruit and iron-earth flavours and some fresh herb notes on a fine-grained, well-structured palate. Serve with roasted lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 6-8 years. A blend of 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 22% Syrah and 14% Malbec, from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, fermented on concrete fermenters to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 14-21 days on skins and aged approx. 18 months in 1-4 y.o.
