Mr. Riggs Iconic Style Australian Wines

11 July,2012

The Mr. Riggs wines from winemaker Ben Riggs are larger than life and reflect the man who makes them. They are made in styles that he personally likes. Based in the McLaren Vale at the Galvanised Wine Group, Ben makes the well-known, first-rate Penny's Hill label, which relies on local fruit. However, the Mr. Riggs wines source grapes from outside the McLaren Vale, recognising that certain varieties can be better suited to sites in different regions. My earlier reviews (click here to see) of Mr. Riggs wines were very complimentary. Here are my reviews of a new selection. www.mrriggs.com.au The wines are distributed in New Zealand by Federal Geo. www.federalgeo.co.nz

FEATURED WINES IN THIS REVIEW

Mr. Riggs ‘Watervale' Clare Valley Riesling 2012

Riesling from Australia – South Australia

18.5/20

Brilliant, very pale straw colour with green hues, pale on edge. This has a very refined, soft nose with intense and pure aromas of white florals, limes and wet stones. Dry to taste, flavours of green apples, limes and florals are tightly bound and concentrated. The acidity is very finely expressed and the wine has a satin-like smooth texture that is simultaneously refreshing and lively. This has energy and nervosity that provides the palate with excellent line. The wine finishes dry with soft, sustained mineral nuances. This is a beautifully refined and pure dry Riesling with an attractively soft mouthfeel and underlying energy. Serve as an aperitif or match with delicately flavoured seafood over the next 6-8 years. Fruit from ‘Kate's Block – Churinga' vineyard, fermented to 11.5% alc. 1,473 cases made. 18.5/20 Jul 2012 RRP $31.99

Mr. Riggs ‘Cold Chalk' Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2009

Chardonnay from Australia – South Australia

18/20

Clone 84 fruit from 14 y.o. vines from ‘Donald's' vineyard at Littlehampton in the Adelaide Hills, WBP and fermented in seasoned French oak to 12.5% alc., the wine given 4 months lees contact. Bright, lemon-green straw colour with a pale edge. The nose is firm and concentrated, with solid and voluminous aromas of chalky minerals, stonefruits and flinty lees, quite complex and layered in expression. Dry and medium-bodied, distinctive and up-front nutty, mineral and chalk-like flavours fill the palate providing a rich and packed, and dense texture. Fine acidity underlines the palate line, but the concentration and depth lead to a solid and broad finish with lingering nuances of flint and minerals. This is a richly packed, soft and balanced Chardonnay with Chablis-like chalky flavours. Match with seafood and poultry over the next 4+ years. 276 cases made. 18.0/20 Jul 2012 RRP $31.99

Mr. Riggs Adelaide Viognier 2009

Viognier from Australia – South Australia

18.5-/20

Bright, lemon-green hued straw-yellow colour, pale on rim. The bouquet is softly concentrated with deep aromas of savoury lime and citrus fruits and green apricots along with flinty reductive complexities and lees elements. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, a complex amalgam of savoury citrus and apricotty fruit flavours are interwoven with nuts, flint and oak toast. The palate has a creamy barrel-ferment overlay, with firmness and depth at the core. This has excellent drive, with tension from lacy acidity, which along with some alcoholic power carries through to a long finish with nuances of flint, toast and stonefruits. This is a complex Viognier with plenty of componentry built into it. It is beginning to develop some secondary interest. Serve with Middle Eastern fare over the next 4-5 years. Fruit from the ‘Angas' vineyards in Langhorne Creek and the ‘Piebald' site in the McLaren Vale. The Langhorne Creek fruit was stainless-steel fermented, the McLaren Vale fruit 60% barrel-fermented with wild yeasts, and undergoing MLF and given lees contact. 13.5% alc. 213 cases made. 18.5-/20 Jul 2012 RRP $31.99

Mr. Riggs ‘Piebald' Adelaide Syrah 2010

Syrah from Australia – South Australia

18+/20

Shiraz fruit from the ‘Piebald' site in Clarendon, with fruit from ‘Braden's' and ‘Edgehill - Ding's Block' in the McLaren Vale, co-fermented with a little Viognier to 14.5% alc. Very dark black-red colour, near impenetrable with a crimson rim. This has a concentrated and intense nose of ripe, black fruits with notes of boysenberries, black pepper, earth and a little inky reduction, all still tightly bound and yet to unfold. Full-bodied, up-front and lively bright black berry fruits are laced with lifted dark florals and black pepper and earthy flavours. This fruit is rich and subtly enlivened by discreet acidity, and supported by fine-grained tannins providing an underlying firm line. This is satin-smooth in mouthfeel and the palate flows to a near lush, sustained finish. This is a concentrated, black-fruited Syrah with very fine textures. Match with spicy Asian duck and pork dishes over the next 5-7 years. 1,207 dozen made. 18.0+/20 Jul 2012 $31.99

Mr. Riggs ‘Yacca Paddock' Adelaide Hills Tempranillo 2009

Tempranillo from Australia – South Australia

17.5/20

Full, even, dark ruby-red colour with purple hues. The bouquet is aromatic and lifted with dark red berry and floral notes alongside savoury earth and mineral elements. Full-bodied, bright red berry fruit flavours with red florals, liquorice and plums form a core, with savoury earth, herb, spice and undergrowth elements present. The alcohol warmth and power is noticeable, adding to the volume and palate presence. This is well-structured with robust tannins and mouthfeel, the acidity in the background. The flavours, grip and alcohol make this an up-front wine, leaving a moderately sustained finish. Savoury red fruits represent the Tempranillo variety in this powerful and structured wine. Serve with slow-cooked meats over the next 5-6+ years. Fruit from the ‘Yacca Paddock' site at Kuitpo in the Adelaide Hills, the fermentation completed to 15.0% alc. in 33% new French oak barrels. 861 cases made. 17.5/20 Jul 2012 RRP $31.99

Mr. Riggs ‘Sticky End' McLaren Vale 2010

Sweet Wine from Australia – South Australia

18-/20

Late harvested Viognier from the ‘Goss Corner' vineyard in the McLaren Vale, left to dry out in small crates for 3 weeks and fermented in 30% new French barriques to 12.5% alc. and 119 g/L rs, the wine left on lees 6 months. Bright, light golden-yellow colour with lemon-green hues. Full, deep and rich, ripe aromas of raisins, marmalade and citrus fruits are interwoven with attractively lifted, honey notes. Very sweet, intense and tightly packed flavours of dried citrus fruits, honey, marmalade and raisins are the feature on the palate. The flavours bloom to be openly expressed with a full richness and generous lusciousness that is very accessible. The acidity is soft, but sufficient for excellent energy and vitality, and carries through to drier finish of apricots, citrus and raisins. Inspired by the Italian ‘passito' style, this is a warm and open dessert wine with little residual varietal expression. Its soft presence and slightly drying finish avoids any cloying. Match with rich puddings and caramel desserts over the next 4-5+ years. 337 cases made. (375 ml) 18.0-/20  Jul 2012  RRP $31.99
