MOJO 2016 Barossa Shiraz and 2015 Coonawarra Cabernet

07 April,2017
MOJO is a label from Rockbare, a producer of South Australian wine from contracted fruit made to express variety and region. Based at Hahndorf, MOJO Winemakers have a sparking and Moscato, plus Adelaide Hills whites plus Barossa Shiraz and Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The winemaker is Marty O’Flaherty. Here, I review the 2016 Barossa Shiraz and 2015 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Both are very firm and taut with concentrated flavours. www.mojowine.com.au The wines are distributed in New Zealand by red+white cellar www.redwhitecellar.co.nz

MOJO Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Syrah from Australia – South Australia

17.5-/20
Full, saturated black-red colour with slight purple hues on the rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated with deeply packed aromas of ripe blackberry fruit along with notes of boysenberries and plum jam, unfolding dark raspberry, black mineral and nutty oak elements. Medium-full bodied, the plate is tightly bound and concentrated with intense, penetrating flavours of blackberries, black plums, boysenberries unfolding dark raspberry and black pepper detail. The fruit is underlined by grainy, powdery tannin extraction and some alcoholic drive with integrated acidity. The wine carries with plenty of energy to a long, tightly bound, lingering finish of ripe black fruits, pepper and minerals. This is a taut and firm, intensely flavoured, black fruited Shiraz with plum and boysenberry notes on a grainy-textured palate with alcohol drive. Match with barbecued and roasted red meats, and firm cheeses over the next 5+ years. 100% Barossa Valley Shiraz fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in oak, 45% new French and 30% new American. 17.5-/20 Apr 2017 RRP $19.99

MOJO Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia – South Australia

16.5+/20
Full, very dark, deep, black-hued red with slight garnet hues on the edge. This has a taut and tightly bound, slender nose with concentrated and intense aromas of blackcurrants and blackberries, minerals and pungent essence of mint and blackcurrant leaf, unfolding stalk and black ink elements. Medium-bodied the palate has succulent and concentrated flavours of blackcurrants and cassis with essence of bitter herbs and leaf, lending stalkiness. The wine is elegant and slender in presentation with a tight core of fruit integrated with fine-grained tannins, and underlying zesty acidity that drives the flavours to a long, lingering black fruited and minerally finish. This is a succulent and firmly concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon with flavours of blackcurrants with herb, leafy and bitter stalk essence elements on a fine-grained palate. Match with herb-marinated lamb and beef dishes over the next 5-6+ years. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra fermented to 14.6% alc., the wine aged in new and 2 y.o. French oak hogsheads. 16.5+/20 Apr 2017 RRP $19.99
