Maui Waipara and Tiki 'Estate' Marlborough 2018 Sauvignon Blanc

04 December,2018

Maui and Tiki Estate are brands of Royce and Sue McKean who operate Tiki Wine and Vineyards from Christchurch not far from Waipara where they established the 320 ha ‘Waiata’ vineyard over 2004 – 2006 after returning to New Zealand from overseas. They then developed a further 225 ha of vineyards in the Upper Wairau Valley in Marlborough over 2007 – 2008. The McKeans became major contract growers with their fruit but with the launch of their own label with 2009 vintage fruit, they quickly expanded their production to make a strong impact on the market. A New Zealand Maori wine producer, Tiki Wines and Vineyards is a member of ‘Tuku’ the recently formed Maori winemakers collective which operates on shared values of the land, family and hospitality. The members comprise Steve Bird Wines, Kuru Kuru, Oster, te Pa and Tiki. Here I review the new 2018 Maui Waipara and Tiki ‘Estate’ Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs.

Maui Waipara Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

Bright, very pale straw colour, near colourless on the rim. The nose is soft and rounded in presentation with aromas of ripe tropical fruit with notes of passionfruit and fresh herbs. The aromatics are a little restrained, but harmonious and showing moderate depth. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has sweetly ripe flavours of tropical fruits and passionfruit with ripe yellow stonefruits and herbal notes forming a rounded core and heart. The mouthfeel is soft with the palate possessing a very fine-textured line, with gently refreshing acidity providing some drive. The fruit sweetness carries to a moderately long finish. This is a soft and rounded, gently ripe, tropical fruited Sauvignon Blanc with fine textures and restrained acidity. Match with Asian fare over the next 2 years. Fruit from the ‘Waiata’ vineyard, cool-fermented in tank to 12.5% alc. and 5.1 g/L RS. 17.0/20 Dec 2018 RRP $18.99

Tiki ‘Estate’ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Marlborough

Brilliant, light straw-yellow colour, paler on the edge. The nose is firm and tight with concentrated and intensely penetrating aromas of pungent passionfruit along with tropical fruit, fresh herbs and thirst-quenching mineral notes. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a fresh, rounded core packed with flavours of passionfruit along with fresh and dark herbs and subtle notes of thirst-quenching minerals. The mouthfeel is soft and fine-textured with a refined line which is enlivened by gentle, mouthwatering acidity. This has good linearity and the wine carries to a lingering finish of passionfruit and tropical fruit. This Sauvignon Blanc has a penetrating nose of passionfruit and herbs on a rounded, but refreshing palate with fine textures and gentle mouthwatering acidity. Serve with Pacific Rim fare over the next 2 years. A blend of fruit from several Marlborough sites, fermented in stainless-steel to 13.0% alc. and 3.6 g/L RS. 18.0/20 Dec 2018 RRP $19.99
