Kemp Road Martinborough Pinot Noir 2016

27 September,2017
The ‘Kemp Road’ brand is that of Great Little Vineyards, the retail outlet of Daniel Kemp’s Kemp Wine Merchants business. The wines are a collaboration between Daniel and his artisan winemaker contacts, and are single vineyard wines designed to express unique terroirs and allow the winemaker the latitude to "push the boundaries of conventional winemaking”. The identity of the winemaker is confidential to avoid any potential brand confusion. Here, I review the 2016 Kemp Road Martinborough Pinot Noir 2016. www.greatlittlevineyards.com

Kemp Road Martinborough Pinot Noir 2016

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

17.5+/20
Light garnet-red colour with a little depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is delicate with ethereal aromas of strawberries and red cherry and berry fruit melded with subtle notes of herbs and suggestions of whole bunch stalk nuances. The nose opens up and intensifies with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has sweet flavours of strawberries and red cherry fruit along with a restrained layering of herbs and stalks with savoury earth and floral lift. The fruit is shy in expression, but positive. Fine-grained, flowery tannins underline the fruit, and grow to provide mouthfeel, texture and structure. The acidity is balanced and integrated with the extraction, and the win carries with finesse and delicacy to the finish. This is an elegant and delicate, subtly expressed Pinot Noir with strawberry, cherry herb and savoury earth flavours on a fine-textured palate with plenty of structure. This is in a style akin to the wines of Volnay. Serve with tuna, salmon, and poultry dishes over the next 4-5 years. A single vineyard wine, clones 777, 115 and Abel, fermented with 20% whole bunches to 13.0% alc., the wine aged11 months in 10% new French oak. 17.5+/20 Sep 2017 RRP $35.50
