Julicher 2015 Sauvignon and Chardonnay, 2014 Pinot and 2013 Dara Vineyard Pinot

Julicher Estate, situated on Te Muna Road in Martinborough is one of the district’s most successful producers of Pinot Noir, having won numerous gold medals and trophies for their ‘Estate’ bottling as well as their second label ’99 Rows’. Julicher’s neighbours include Escarpment Vineyard, Big Sky, Craggy Range, Pond Paddock, Te Hera and Redbank, testifying to the provenance of the district. Julicher Estate was founded by Wim Julicher when he planted vines on his land in Te Muna Road in 1996, releasing his first wine from the 2002 vintage. Wim and his partner Sue Darling continue to be involved in every facet of the business. Their long standing winemaker Outi Jakovirta was with Julicher since 2005, and was superseded by her friend Jannine Rickards in 2016. The viticulturist is the very experienced Derek Mitchell. Besides the Pinot Noirs, Julicher Estate has a range of well-made and successful whites and a rosé. Here, I review the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, the ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir 2014 and a 2013 single vineyard Pinot Noir from the ‘Dara’ vineyard in nearby Todds Road. The vineyard was owned by friends of the Julichers, but was sold in 2015.


Julicher Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

Bright, light straw-yellow colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full and voluminous with aromas of ripe green stonefruits and gooseberries harmoniously entwined with fresh herbs and mineral elements. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has lively and sweet flavours of ripe green stonefruits along with restrained gooseberry and fresh herb notes. The palate possesses a well-packed, rounded core, and the wine flows along a fine-textured line with slippery, racy acidity. The wine carries gently with some underlying acid tension to a soft, lingering, nuanced finish of green stonefruits. This is a softly concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with stonefruit, gooseberry and herb flavours on a soft-textured palate with gentle, lacy acidity. Match with Mediterranean fare over the next 2 years. Hand-picked fruit from ‘Julicher Estate’, WBP with some skin contact and cool-fermented in tank with 10% indigenous yeast fermented in seasoned French oak to 12.75% alc. and 4.65 g/L RS, with no MLF. 16.5+/20 Oct 2017 RRP 18.00

Julicher Martinborough Chardonnay 2015

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

Bright, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, lighter on edge. The nose is elegantly concentrated with finely packed and deep aromas of ripe yellow stonefruit entwined with nutty oak and oxidative complexities, unfolding citrus fruit notes with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palte has a tightly concentrated core with flavours of yellow stonefruits melded with nutty notes, a little creamy barrel-ferment and complexing oxidative elements. The palate features a firm, fine-textured line with crisp acidity providing freshness and energy. Citrus flavours emerge as the wine leads to a tight, lingering finish. This is a firm and concentrated Chardonnay with tightly bound flavours of stonefruit and citrus fruit and complex nutty and oxidative notes on a crisp palate. Serve with seafood and poultry over the next 3+ years. Clone 15 and Mendoza fruit from ‘Julicher Estate’, WBP and fermented in seasoned French oak to 13.13% alc., the wine aged 10 months on lees in barrel, undergoing partial MLF. 17.0/20 Oct 2017 RRP $24.00

Julicher Martinborough Pinot Noir 2014

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

Dark ruby-red colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is full and deep with concentrated aromas of ripe, dark-red and black berried fruit along with savoury herb notes and a complex amalgam of whole bunch stalk elements and earthy detail. This has excellent intensity and presence and is a classic expression of Martinborough. Medium-full bodied, the palate has gently mouthfilling flavours of ripe, savoury dark-red and black berried fruits layered with complex herb, whole bunch and earthy flavours. The fruit is supported by fine, grainy tannin extraction with soft, integrated acidity. The palate has power and underlying drive that carries the wine to a softly full, lingering, complex nuanced finish. This is a classical Martinborough Pinot Noir with rich, softly full, savoury dark-red and black fruits with a complex layer of dark herbs, stalks and earthy nuances. Serve with wild duck and pork, or slow-cooked game meat over the next 6-7+ years. A barrel selection blend. Clones 6, 115 and Abel from ‘Julicher Estate’, hand-picked and fermented with 25% whole bunches to 13.67% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 25% new French oak. 19.0-/20 Oct 2017 RRP $45.00

Julicher ‘Dara Vineyard’ Martinborough Pinot Noir 2013

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

Even, dark ruby-red colour, paler on edge with slight garnet hues. The nose is elegantly presented with harmonious aromas of dark-red berry fruit along with lifted dark-red florals forming a firm and tight core, unfolding notes of dark herbs and subtle, savoury earthy complexities. Medium-bbodied. The palate has richly sweet and bright, poised fruit flavours of dark-red berry fruits and a lifted dark-red floral array entwined with subtle notes of dark herbs and earth. The palate is fresh and vibrant with fine-grained tannin extraction and bright acidity. The flavours flow with energy, carrying to a long and sustained, nuanced finish of savoury fruit and red florals. This is a rich, dark-red berry fruited and floral-nuanced Pinot Noir with fine tannins, bright acidity, and subtle complexities with vibrancy and poise. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8+ years. A barrel selection wine. 100% Abel clone fruit from the ‘Dara’ vineyard, Todds Road, hand-picked, destemmed and fermented to 14.17% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 20% new French oak. 140 cases made. 19.0/20 Oct 2017 RRP $60.00
