John Forrest Collection Waitaki Valley Pinot Gris 2011

11 June,2012
The Waitaki Valley inland from Oamaru and Waimate, near Kurow in North Otago has captured John Forrest's imagination and passion. He sees the continental climate, geographical aspect and limestone-rich soils as being especially conducive for the making of strikingly distinctive, terroir driven, elegant wines. The taste of a Pinot Gris wine, made by the late Doug Wisor of Craggy Range was sufficient proof for John to put his trust and invest capital in the district, buying 15 ha of land and establishing a well-protected, north-west facing hillside vineyard on the southern side of the Waitaki Valley. At present there are 2 ha of Pinot Noir and 1.5 ha each of Pinot Gris and Chardonnay planted. John is now one of the strongest advocates for the region, noting that across vintages and varieties, ripeness is achieved with low sugars, providing finished wine with lower alcohols. Here is his first ‘John Forrest Collection' Pinot Gris from Waitaki Valley fruit, a wine he sees fit being an outstanding example of the variety in a most suitable growing area. www.forrest.co.nz

John Forrest ‘Collection' Waitaki Valley North Otago Pinot Gris 2011

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Otago

18.5-/20

Brilliant, even straw-yellow colour with slight green hues. This has a very fine, aromatic bouquet of white florals and stonefruits unfolding to reveal delicate notes of pears, honey, spices and minerals. Dryish to taste and elegantly presented, this is still tightly bound, but shows excellent concentration of pure stonefruit flavours with lovely line and an understated power and drive.. Nuances of spiced pears and distinct minerally notes combine with fine lacy acidity resulting in a mouthwatering palate. Refined textures add to the smooth flow and lead to a lovely delicate, sustained finish. This is an elegant, pure Pinot Gris with lovely delicacy that will make it a match with Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine over the next 4-5+ years. Hand-picked fruit transported cold to Marlborough for vinification. Cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. and 10 g/L rs, the wine given 6 months lees aging. 18.5-/20 Jun 2012 RRP $40.00
