Henry’s Drive Padthaway Syrah 2015

20 November,2017

Established in 1992 by Kim and the late Mark Longbottom, Henry’s Drive is a very successful Padthaway, South Australian winegrowing operation which has over 100 ha of vineyard in Padthaway and over 12 ha in the McLaren Vale. Henry’s Drive is named after the proprietor of the 19thcentury mail coach service that ran through the property. The wines are what I describe as big, soft and substantial, and have proven very popular with the consumer as well as with judges. The Shiraz wines are mainstays, showing plenty of traditional character, but there is also a more contemporary Syrah bottling. I review the 2015 new release. www.henrysdrive.com The Henry’s Drive wines are distributed by Procure Liquor. www.procureliquor.co.nz

Henry’s Drive Padthaway Syrah 2015

Syrah from Australia – South Australia

18.5/20

Very dark, deep, near impenetrable purple-hued black-red colour, youthful in appearance. Softly full and well-concentrated, the nose has aromas of ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit with black plum and an array of dark-red and violet florals with integrated fragrant oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate has sweetly rich and ripe fruit flavours of dark raspberries, blackberries and boysenberry fruit with notes of plum jam, violet florals with nuances of black pepper, liquorice and spice that add interest. The mouthfeel is soft and svelte with supple, fine-grained tannin extraction in the background, and integrated, ripe acidity. The palate has opulence and flows smoothly to a soft, lingering finish of ripe berry and plum flavours. This is a rich, lush, near opulently ripe Syrah with blackberry, boysenberry, raspberry and plum flavours on a smooth flowing, supple palate. Match with roasted red meat dishes and casseroles over the next 6-7+ years. Fruit from estate hillside vines, fermented with a small portion in barrel to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months in new and seasoned oak, 80% French and 20% American. 18.5/20 Nov 2017 RRP $30.00
