Grava Martinborough 2017 Rosé and LH Sauvignon Blanc

Grava is the Martinborough winegrowing venture of Alistair Gardner and Karla Falloon and family, based on an established vineyard on and Lake Road, south of the village which they purchased in November 2014. The vineyard is planted to 2.0 ha of Pinot Noir, clones 777, 115 and Abel, 1.7 ha of Sauvignon Blanc and 1.5 ha of Riesling. Alistair is an experienced winemaker having worked overseas as well as in New Zealand, and is the winemaker at Alana Estate, taking over from Alex Craighead from the 2018 vintage. In the short time Alistair and Karla have run and had their inputs in the vineyard, they have quickly stepped up the quality of the wines. Here, I review the new release 2017 Rosé and the first of a Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc. www.grava.nz

Grava Martinborough Rosé 2017

Rose from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

Pale peach-pink with a little depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is firm and tightly bound with aromas of quince and yellow stonefruits along with subtle chalky mineral elements, unfolding soft red florals and suggestions of nuts with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is crisp, zesty and refreshing with light and delicate flavours of quince and yellow stonefruits with nuances of red florals. The fruit has a mouthwatering mineral edge with fine phenolics enhancing the thirst-quenching mouthfeel. The wine carries with good energy and fresh acid liveliness leading to a lingering floral finish. This is a light, but refreshing and mouthwatering dry rosé with quince and stonefruit flavours with floral and mineral elements on a light-textured palate. Serve as an aperitif and with antipasto over the next 2 years. Produced solely from Abel clone Pinot Noir, WBP and fermented in 500 L puncheons to 13.0% alc. and 5 g/L RS. 17.0+/20 Nov 2018 RRP $28.00

Sweet Wine from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington

Deep, light golden-yellow colour, a little lighter on the edge. This has a full, decadent and opulent nose with deeply concentrated aromas of ripe tropical fruit and subtle lantana notes, overlaid by aromas of honey, lime marmalade and musky botrytis. Very sweet to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate has rich and luscious flavours of tropical fruits, lantana and subtle notes of green stonefruits unfolding lime marmalade, honey and musk. This is opulent and the mouthfeel features a gentle unctuousness, with good acid cut providing balance. The wine flows smoothly to a soft, lingering finish of honey and musky marmalade. This is a decadent Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc with flavours of tropical fruits, honey, lime marmalade and a layering of musky botrytis. Serve with fruit desserts over the next 4 years. Botrytised Sauvignon Blanc, foot-stomped and given overnight soaking then fermented in tank to 10.5% alc. and 160 g/L RS. (375 ml) 18.5/20 Nov 2018 RRP $32.00
