Glasnevin ‘Limited Release’ Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2016

The ‘Glasnevin Wines’ brand was established by the Johns family following extensive experience growing and making wine in the Waipara Valley. The brand reflects what they see as the special nature of the wines grown on the Glasnevin gravels. The soils offer excellent drainage and aeration and tend to lower yields, the resulting wines showing minerality. The wines are made by an experienced winemaker under contract at a Waipara facility. Here, I review the new release 2016 Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

Even, dark ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is well-proportioned with intensely concentrated and deep aromas of savoury black cherry and berry fruit interwoven with dark herbs, a little earthiness and mineral suggestions, and whole bunch stalk and stem complexities, unfolding nuances of spice and violet florals. Medium-full bodied, the palate possesses an elegantly concentrated core of ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit melded with a layering of dark herbs and subtle whole bunch stalk notes. The fruit is firmly packed, and supported by fine-grained tannin extraction and structure, with balanced, ripe, soft acidity. The palate has depth and linearity, and carries to a fine, but firm, lingering finish of black fruits. The is a concentrated and intense black cherry and berry fruited Pinot Noir with complexing dark herb and whole bunch stalk notes on a fine-structured, firm palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 6 years. Waipara Valley fruit indigenous yeast fermented with 35% whole bunches to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in seasoned French oak barriques. 18.5/20 Aug 2017 RRP $35.00
