Ellero Central Otago Riesling 2015 and Pinot Noir 2014

20 October,2017
Ellero is the winegrowing venture of John Montero and Roberta Manell Montero, Californians with considerable experience in winemaking and wineselling. They settled in Central Otago in 2000 establishing their 7-plus hectares of vines on their 16 ha property in the Pisa district just out of Cromwell. The vineyard named ‘Pisa Terrace’ is planted to Dijon clones, UCD5 and Abel Pinot Noir, with a small amount of Riesling on a steep, stony slope. John and Roberta tend to the viticulture, the vineyard certified BioGro organic in 2011. John makes the wine at the Terra Sancta facility. The Ellero label now has Pinot Noir and Riesling bottlings, only from estate, with the Gewurztraminer made in earlier years from contract fruit now discontinued. The vineyard and wines have been well-received from the beginning. Here are my reviews of the 2015 Riesling and 2014 Pinot Noir.

Ellero ‘Pisa Terrace’ Central Otago Riesling 2015

Riesling from New Zealand – Otago

Bright light straw-yellow colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is soft with taut and tightly bound aromas of lime fruit and white florals entwined with mouthwatering chalky minerals, and a suggestion of toast. The nose shows a dense core that will unfold to reveal more interest and complexity. Dry to taste and medium-bodied. the palate has an elegant, tightly bound core of lime and lemon fruit and an amalgam of white florals and minerals. The mouthfeel features a fine, smooth texture and line, with thirst-quenching lacy acidity. The wine carries to a firm, lingering finish of limes and minerals. This is a finely concentrated dry Riesling with time fruit melded with mouthwatering minerals and a long finish. This will develop well over the next 4-5+ years, Serve as an aperitif and with shellfish. Fruit from the ‘Pisa Terrace’ vineyard fermented with a portion in neutral French oak puncheons to 12.6% alc. and 5.75 g/L RS, TA 7.3 g/L and pH 2.9, the wine in the oak portion aged 6 months in barrel. 18.0/20 Oct 2017 RRP $25.00

Ellero ‘Pisa Terrace’ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2014

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Otago

Ruby-red colour with some depth, a little lighter edged. This has a softly full nose with good depth of aromatics, showing red cherry and berry fruit intermingling with subtly savoury dried herbs and dark thyme herb complexities. Medium-full bodied, the palate has elegantly concentrated flavours of red cherry and berry fruit entwined with thyme herbs savoury herb-stalk elements and sensitive oaking. The mouthfeel ha light, grainy tannins providing balanced structure with integrated acidity. The wine flows positively, unfolding raspberry liqueur nuances, and carries to a lingering finish of red fruits and savoury herbs. This is a finely concentrated Pinot Noir with red cherry, berry and raspberry fruit along with complexing savoury herb notes. Match with wild duck and pork over the next 5-6 years. Clones 667, 777, 115, 5 and Abel from the ‘Pisa Terrace’ vineyard fermented to 13.6% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 20% new French oak. Certified BioGro organic. 267 cases made. 18.0/20 Oct 2017 RRP $40.00
