Elephant Hill ‘Le Phant Blanc' 2011

24 July,2012

The latest news is that Elephant Hill has just accessed two vineyards to supplement its fruit source of grapes grown at its home base at Te Awanga. The new additions are a purchase of a 17 ha organically certified vineyard opposite Gimblett Road, and the long term lease arrangement of a 15 ha vineyard in the Bridge Pa Triangle. Both are mature and established sites. This allows winemaker Steve Skinner the ability to increase his blending options, especially with Syrah and the Bordeaux varieties, as the fruit character of these vineyards will be very complementary to that of the coastal-influenced Te Awanga fruit. In essence, this is what Elephant Hill has proved to be very adept at. Blending to attain great balance and completeness is indeed a skill, and to do so to have wines with finesse and elegance is an achievement. This can be epitomised by Elephant Hill's new ‘Le Phant' Blanc, a wine blended from three varieties, as reviewed here. www.elephanthill.co.nz

Elephant Hill ‘Le Phant Blanc' Hawke's Bay 2011

Blended White from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

18.5-/20

A blend Viognier, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer hand-picked and WBP, and fermented in stainless-steel, 5% of the Viognier in barrel, to 13.5% alc. and 8.5 g/L rs. Brilliant, very pale straw-yellow, very pale on rim. This has a very refined, elegant and beautifully delicate, aromatic nose of yellow florals with hints of exotic tropical fruits and rose-petals unfolding subtle herb elements. Off-dry to taste, very fine and delicate and subtly expressed flavours of rose-petals and exotic florals and fruits are interwoven harmoniously. This is very finely textured and smooth in mouthfeel, with restrained richness and hints of unctuousness, allied to fresh, lacy acidity. The flavours carry though to a near ethereal finish that lingers with beautiful floral notes. An intriguingly harmonious and beautifully refined, subtle, aromatic wine, this will match Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine over the next 4+ years. 18.5-/20 Jul 2012 RRP $22.00
