Domaine Rewa Central Otago Chardonnay 2016

Domaine Rewa is the Central Otago wine venture of Philippa Foubet who acquired a 5.5 ha vineyard established in Lowburn in 1997. She has Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris planted, the vineyard certified BioGro in 2015, and managed biodynamically by Grant Roulston and Gary Ford of Vinewise. Pete Bartle of VinPtro is the winemaker. The Domaine Rewa wines have impressed me with their elegance and classical Central Otago expression, with the Chardonnay arguably the best of a very smart collection. Indeed, the Chardonnay has performed well on the show circuit, the 2015 vintage awarded the Trophy for Champion Chardonnay at the 2017 Bragato Wine Awards. Here, I review the 2016, due for release soon.


Domaine Rewa Central Otago Chardonnay 2016

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Otago


Brilliant straw-yellow colour with suggestions of green hues and some depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated with rich aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits entwined with complexing mealy and nutty notes, subtle creamy barrel-ferment and toasty oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate has richly concentrated and deeply packed flavours of ripe yellow stonefruit and citrus fruit melded with mealy elements and entwined with creamy barrel-ferment, notes and nutty, toasty oak. The flavours form a fulsome and rounded core with fine, underlying acidity. The wine carries along a very fine-textured line, leading to a very long and sustained finish of citrus fruit, mealy complexities and toast. This is a rich, rounded and concentrated Chardonnay with mouthfilling flavours of stonefruit and citrus fruit, mealy complexities, cream, nutty and toasty oak. Match with roast pork and veal dishes over the next 4 years. Mendoza and clone 15 fruit from the ‘Epicurious’ vineyard, hand-picked, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 9 months in 35% new French oak, undergoing batonnage and MLF. 18.5/20 Jan 2018 RRP $40.00
