Clearwater Cove 2018 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris

28 August,2018

Clearwater Cove is a secondary tier brand for the Yealands Wine Group. The wines are made under the supervision of Jeff Fyfe, with the fruit source primarily from Marlborough, supplemented with grapes from other regions as required. The brand is mainly exported, but does ave a presence in the New Zealand market. Here, I review the 2018 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Clearwater Cove Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand – Marlborough

Bright, pale straw colour with slight green hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is bright and fresh with vibrant aromas of passionfruit and sweet tropical fruit, fresh herbs and snow peas. The aromatics form a rounded, soft and elegant core unfolding notes of nettles and cut grass. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a firm core of passionfruit, fresh herbs, cut-grass and nettles. The fruit carries along a taut, phenolic-textured line with some drying grip, with background acidity keeping the palate fresh and mouthwatering. The flavours carry to a lingering, textured finish. This is a bright and vibrant passionfruited Sauvignon Blanc with nettle and cut grass notes on a palate with some grip and dry textures. Serve as an aperitif, with seafood and Pacific Rim fare over the next 2 years. Marlborough fruit cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. 16.0+/20 Aug 2018 RRP $12.99

Clearwater Cove Marlborough Pinot Gris 2018

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Marlborough

Bright, pale straw colour with green hues, near colourless on the rim. The nose is fresh and clean with fragrant aromas of white and yellow stonefruits along with some exotic floral elements with pears emerging. A little honeysuckle unfolds in the glass, This is light and ethereal. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has elegantly sweet and rich flavours of white and yellow stonefruits with florals, pears and honeysuckle. The flavours are up-front and expressed gently. The palate has a light-textured line that carries the wine to a light finish of florals and honey. This is an elegant, fragrant, dry Pinot Gris with stonefruit, floral and honeysuckle notes on a fine textured line. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 2+years. Marlborough fruit cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 13.0% alc. and 3.9 g/L RS. 17.0/20 Aug 2018 RRP $12.99
