Brookfields ‘Ohiti Estate’ 2018 Pinot Gris and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon

When Peter Robertson purchased Brookfields in 1977, he pioneered the modern Hawkes’s Bay winery. Nowadays, Brookfields Vineyards is a very well-known and highly respected producer of a diverse range of Hawke’s Bay wine, but remains a focussed, boutique operation making 8,000 to 10,000 cases of wine annually. Brookfields draws its fruit primarily from estate vineyards: ‘Ohiti’ Estate, ‘Tuki Tuki’, ‘Bridge Pa’ and the ‘Home’ vineyard at Meeanee. Here, I review the 2018 Pinot Gris and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon from the ‘Ohiti Estate’ which is situated in an inland heat tarpon a former bed of the old Ngaruroro River. www.brookfieldsvineyards.co.nz

Pinot Gris from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay


Bright, pale golden-yellow colour, lighter on the edge. The nose is full with good volume and depth of yellow stonefruit aromas entwined with pear and yellow floral notes and subtle, savoury stonefruit kernel and nutty detail. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has gently rich flavours of yellow stonefruits along with pears and hints of savoury stonefruit kernels, with nutty suggestions adding interest. The mouthfeel is rounded with a moderately concentrated core, and the wine flows along a fine-textured line with light, refreshing acidity lending energy, leading to a soft finish with some length. This is a gently rich-fruited, dry Pinot Gris with yellow stonefruits, pear and floral flavours with some nutty interest on a rounded, fine-textured palate. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 3 years. Fruit from the ‘Ohiti Estate’, cool-fermented in tank to 13.5% alc. and 5 g/L RS, the wine aged on lees undergoing batonnage. 18.0-/20 Dec 2018 RRP $20.00

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay


Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with purple hues on the rim. The nose is softly concentrated and packed with a rounded core of ripe dark redcurrant fruit harmoniously melded with blackcurrants and cassis aromas along with dark and fresh herbs that blossom with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is taut and well-bound with an elegant heart of fresh, fragrant redcurrant fruit entwined with blackcurrants, herbs and a little cassis. The palate is supported by light, grainy tannin extraction and the mouthfeel is enlivened by a line of fresh, bight acidity. The wine carries with sweetness and acid energy to a slender, lingering finish. This is an elegant, taut Cabernet Sauvignon with fresh and sweet redcurrant and blackcurrant flavours on a light, grainy palate with fresh acidity. Fruit from the ‘Ohiti Estate, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 3 weeks on skins and aged in 1 and 2 y.o. French oak. 17.0+/20 Dec 2018 RRP $20.00
