Brookfields 2018 ‘Fiesta’ Rosé, and 2017 ‘Back Block’ Syrah and ‘Sun Dried’ Malbec

Brookfields Vineyards established by Peter and Sharon Robertson in 1977 was one of the modern pioneer boutique wine producers in Hawke’s Bay. Based in Meeanee, the operation has grown to encompass four estate vineyards, the others situated in Ohiti, Tuki Tiki and Bridge Pa. Much of the 8,000 to 10,000 case annual production is centred around the varieties and styles that are classical for the Hawke’s Bay region. But Peter and Sharon are continually developing their portfolio to have unique and/or eclectic bottlings that create interest for their loyal followers. Brookfields ‘Fiesta’ Hawke’s Bay Rosé 2018

Rose from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Bright, pale salmon-pink colour, lighter on the edge. The nose is softly full in volume with delicate aromas of red florals and red cherry fruit, along with hints of pomegranate and white stonefruits. The aromas form a fine, taut, thirst-quenching core. Dry to taste and medium bodied, the palate is delicately flavoured with subtle notes of red cherries entwined with florals and stonefruits. The fruit has a soft, smooth heart with light, lacy acidity providing freshness and liveliness. The fruit unfolds some sweetness and richness and the wine carries to a refreshing finish. This is a subtly sweet and delicately flavoured dry rosé with cherry and floral flavours on a smooth, refreshing palate. Serve as an aperitif and with canapés over the next 2 years. Fruit from Ohiti and Red Metal Triangle, predominantly Syrah with a small portion of Pinot Gris, fermented in tank as free-run juice to 13.0% alc. and 4 g/L RS. 17.5/20 Jul 2018 RRP $21.00

Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Dark, deep ruby-red colour with black hues at the heart, a little lighter edged. The nose is full with good depth and is well-packed with aromas of ripe blackberry fruit entwined with an amalgam of dark plums and black pepper, unfolding subtle fragrant violet florals and spice notes, along with nuances of game and earth. Medium-bodied, the palate has good depth of blackberry and black pepper fruit intermixed with violet florals, spices and herbs. A little savoury game and earthiness adds a layer of interest. The fruit has good presence and is supported by light, grainy tannin extraction and structure, with some fresh acidity enlivening the mouthfeel. The flavours carry to a lingering finish. This is a flavoursome Syrah with blackberry and black pepper fruit with florals, spices and game notes on a textured palate with lively acidity. Match with barbecued and roasted red meats over the next 5-6 years. 100% Syrah, from Ohiti, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in seasoned oak. 18.0-/20 Jul 2018 RRP $21.00

Brookfields ‘Sun Dried’ Hawke’s Bay Malbec 2017

Malbec from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Full, very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with purple tints, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly proportioned with intense aromas of ripe blackberries and savoury plums, unfolding some dark herb and spice nuances and nutty oak. This has very good depth and penetration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in presentation with a fine and firm core of blackberry and black plum fruit intermingling with spices and subtle notes of dark herbs and oak. The fruit has richness and liveliness, and is underlined by grainy tannin structure with good grip, and balanced by fresh acidity. The wine has good linearity and carries to a long, textured finish. This is an elegantly presented Malbec with moderately rich, ripe blackberry and plum fruit with spice notes on a grainy structured palate. Serve with slow cooked game meat over the next 6-8+ years. 100% Malbec from the Tuki Tuki Valley, a portion sun-dried for 2 weeks resulting in 17% loss of weight, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in mainly 1 y.o. oak. 18.0+/20 Jul 2018 RRP $26.00
