Akaroa Winery Cuvee Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay

Akaroa Winery is the brand of Takamatua Valley Vineyards on the Banks Peninsula, near Christchurch. Allan Ransley and Timberly Hughes took over the 26 ha property in 2001, which included 2.2 ha of vines established in 1995. The varieties are Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, planted in three blocks. More Pinot Noir has been recently planted bringing the acreage to 2.5 ha of vines. Allan tends to the viticulture and Timberly makes the wines on-site, the 5 tonnes of fruit yielding 400-500 cases of wine. The vineyard is certified AgriQuality organic. Here, I review a selection of recent vintage white wines.


Akaroa Winery ‘Cuvee Blanc’ Banks Peninsula Canterbury 2015

Blended White from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

Bright straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, pale edged. This has a light, fresh nose of white stonefruits entwined with yellow florals and hints of nuts. This is finely concentrated and tightly bound, revealing some lanolin notes. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has bright and lively flavours of white stonefruits along with nutty notes and suggestions of florals, unfolding lanolin and waxy nuances. The mouthfeel is fresh and lively with bright acidity, and some underlying power and drive provides linearity. The wine flows along a very light, fine-textured line, leading to a bright, refreshing, nutty finish. This is a bright and refreshing blended white with stonefuit and nutty flavours and good linearity. Serve as an aperitif, with seafood and poultry over the next 2-3 years. A blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Riesling, WBP and co-fermented in barrel to 11.6% alc. and 3.0 g/L RS, the wine aged 6 months in seasoned oak undergoing 100% MLF. 16.0+/20 Sep 2017 RRP $25.00

Riesling from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

Bright, even straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, paler edged. The nose is elegant with delicately fragrant aromas of lime and lemon fruit along with subtle hints of herbs and lanolin. This has freshness and clarity. Medium-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has aromatic flavours of lime, lemon and white florals, entwined with lifted herbs which enhance the freshness. The mouthfeel is vibrant and lively with refreshing, zesty acidity, and the wine has good linearity, flowing with energy and tension to a lingering, citrussy finish with lanolin and mineral elements. This is a lively and refreshing dryish Riesling with lime and lemon fruit, with floral, herb and waxy hints. Serve with Asian fare over the next 3-4 years. Fruit fermented in stainless-steel barrels to 12.3% alc., 19.84 g/L RS, TA 8.3 g/L and pH 2.98, the wine aged 6 months in tank. 17.0-/20 Sep 2017 RRP $30.00

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Canterbury & Waipara

Bright, even, light straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, lighter edged. The nose is softly voluminous with even and accessible aromas of white stonefruits melded with delicate notes of citrus fruits along with a fresh, steely, mineral edge, and suggestions of nutty oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a light, rounded and concentrated heart of stonefruits and citrus fruits. The palate possesses a little alcohol drive with crisp acidity providing good linearity. The mouthfeel is zesty and flows along a fine phenolic textured thread, leading to a light, clear, subtle finish of stonefuits and nuts. This is a light stonefruit and citrus-fruit focussed Chardonnay with some nutty notes and some drive and linearity, on a zesty palate. Match with seafood over the next 2-3 years. Fruit fermented in barrel to 13.3% alc., the wine aged 6 months in seasoned oak, undergoing 100% MLF. 16.5-/20 Sep 2017 RRP $30.00
