New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition 2018 Results

The results of the 2018 New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition and the Canterbury Wine Competition 2018 have been released. Associated with is the award for New Zealand Winemaker of the Year. The competitions are held under the auspices of the Canterbury A&P Show, and this sees its 16th year, and is open to any aromatic wine from any country with the purpose of highlighting the best aromatic wines available to the consumer. The Canterbury Wine Competition results are drawn from the Aromatics judging, and apply to wines entered that conform to a minimum 85% make-up of Canterbury grown fruit. The results are designed to showcase Canterbury wines. www.theshow.co.nz

This year, the wines were judged in Christchurch over 13-14 October by a panel chaired by Jim Harre, with Jane Boyle, Rebecca Deed, Petter Evans, Paul Harre, Kate Radburnd and James Rowan. For the Aromatic Competition, there were 31 gold (9.45%) medals, 52 (15.85%) silvers and 154 (46.95%) bronzes awarded, with a total medal count of 237 (72.26%) from 328 wines judged. The Supreme Champion Wine in Show was the Spy Valley ‘Envoy’ Johnson Vineyard Riesling 2012. The Winemaker of the Year was awarded to Jen Parr of Valli Vineyard who submitted the Valli Gibbston Pinot Noir 2016, the Valli ‘The Real McCoy’ Orange Wine Pinot Gris 2017 and Valli Waitaki Riesling 2018.
