Campo Viejo Cava Brut Reserva NV

09-Jul-2018
Bodegas Campo Viejo is one of Rioja’s most innovative and contemporary wineries which specifically made inexpensive crianza styled Riojas instead of the long oak aged versions that were normal at the time. The new style became very quickly and widely accepted, especially in the FMCG channels, and the accessible wine style has been supported by strong marketing. Such was the bodega’s success that it was purchased by Pernod-Ricard who have grown the brand to a global one. The winery achieved Carbon Neutral certification in 2012. The winemaking team is led by Elena Adell. Here I review a Cava wine, a new addition to the portfolio. www.campoviejo.com The wine is imported and distributed in New Zealand by Pernod-Ricard.

Gran Campo Viejo Cava Brut Reserva NV
Bright, even straw-yellow with light, lemon-gold hues, paler on the edge, the bubbles moderately fine but vigorous. The nose is softly full with good depth of yellow stonefruit aromas harmoniously melded with sweetly ripe apples, hints of herbs and nuts, along with earthiness, unveiling a steely freshness from the core. Dryish to taste and light-medium bodied, soft and gentle effervescence introduces light and accessible flavours of stonefruits, apples, nuts and herbs with a little earth. The flavours grow to form a rounded heart with good presence. The wine flows easily along a light, phenolic-textured line with restrained acidity leadling to a light finish. This is a soft and rounded Cava with fruit-focussed flavours, showing stonefruits, apples, nuts and a little earth, with gentle mousse and a light-textured line. This is easy and delightful as an anytime sparkling to enjoy over the next 2 years. A blend of Parellada, Xa-rello and Macabeo from Catalonia, fermented to make the base wine then undergoing secondary fermentation in bottle to 11.5% alc. and 12 g/LRS, the wine aged 18 months before release. Lot L 11 10 6. 17.0-/20 Jul 2018 RRP $26.99
